Coronavirus (COVID-19) catch up premium – REVIEWED SUMMER 2021

Intent: In August 2020, the Government announced additional funding for schools to deliver catch up funding, following the COVID-19 lockdown measures. This amounted to £80 per pupil, provided in 3 tranches. The first allocation was paid in autumn 2020, based on the latest available data on pupils. The second grant payment was also paid in early 2021, based on updated pupil data from the October 2020 census. WIJPS received a total of £46.67 per pupil in the 2020-21 financial year, as part payment of the £80 per pupil catch up grant. A further £33.33 per pupil was also paid during the summer term 2021.

The amount allocated to Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School based on eligible pupils is £17,680.

The Education Endowment Fund (EEF) has provided early research evidence around projections for the impact of school closures during lockdown, predominantly on the impact for disadvantaged pupils. The school’s strategic response to devising and implementing the catch-up programme fully takes these findings into account.

In summary, the EEF projections for the impact of widespread school closures identified:

• The disadvantaged attainment gap widening

• Assessment of lost learning as crucial

• Targeted support in addition to wider school initiatives were required

• Absence rates upon return were crucial

Effective home learning programmes had been found to mitigate the impact. There is an acknowledgement that whilst the take up of remote learning was good at WIJPS, a significant number of pupils (including disadvantaged pupils) had a prolonged period without face-to-face teaching and learning.

The purpose of this report is to demonstrate the way the catch-up money was spent over the past year and to allow us to inform parents, carers and governors of the impact it had on pupil achievement.

Implementation of the grant:
Although we receive funding on a per pupil basis, we have assessed all pupils in order to identify the cohorts that will benefit most from the funding.

Who we targeted
* Small groups or 1-to-1 tuition in years 3 and 4 predominantly – 2 days per week by additional class teacher
* The Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI) for our reception cohort – every afternoon by reception nursery nurse
* Healthy hands / fine and gross motor skills interventions – 3 hours daily by dedicated LSA in reception class
* Additional targeted phonics interventions – year 2 (September to December), year 1 (January to June) by phonics lead
* Bottom 20% readers in each class – class teacher led daily interventions

Impact: How the effect of this expenditure on the educational attainment of those pupils was assessed

As with all school funding, governors were be made aware of our plans for the catch-up funding, how it was spent and the rationale behind our decisions to target individuals and specific year groups over others. This was part of the Headteacher’s report to governors at termly teaching and standards meetings and at full governing body meetings.
