MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE at WIJPS

Intent

Our modern foreign language taught is Ivrit.  This is linked to our Jewish Studies Curriculum.

At WIJPS, we value the importance of learning a Modern Foreign Language and, by teaching our pupils Ivrit, we are giving them the opportunity to develop a love of the language and of Israel which will provide them with a valuable educational, social and cultural experience.

Ivrit is a living language and it connects many of our pupils to Torah, Israel and their Jewish heritage.  The learning of Ivrit complements and supports the Hebrew reading, Biblical Vocabulary, prayer opportunities and grammar that are features of our Jewish Studies Curriculum and enables our pupils to develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning.   It also enables our pupils to communicate with family and friends who speak Ivrit and helps to develop a positive relationship with Israel.

Aims

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic source
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
